Fredo Viola, Contact Sheet

Here's a glimpse at a contact sheet I just got back from my shoot with Fredo Viola.

Fredo doesn't really like being in front of a camera (which I totally respect), so we just ending up talking for a few hours, and I took 4 frames of Holga during that time.

I think these shots are very honest representations of his personality: reserved, contemplative, and, above all, very joyful. This seemingly small shoot really taught me a lot about the importance of not forcing something to happen, and really just being aware and letting things be. If I had tried to take more than these few pictures, the atmosphere would have been uncomfortable, dishonest, and the friendship we developed would have been tainted.

After I took these, I handed the camera to Fredo, and he ran off the rest of the roll while we walked around the city (which by the way Fredo, your shots came out great!).

Thanks Fredo, and I look forward to hanging out again in the future.

I'll post the final prints when they come.

Peace. - Caleb

P.S. Sorry, but the scanner I used to scan the contact sheet was pretty dusty....

Stewart Vann

This is a b-side from the shoot I did with Stewart Vann a couple of weeks ago. The pages covering him are copies of his own song lyrics and poems.

For my ArtWalk exhibit this year I'll be presenting metaphorical portraits for each stage of the Creative Process (the title of the exhibit). I've summarized the process into four stages: Inspiration, Organization, Execution, and Presentation. The final portrait of Stewart will represents the second stage of this process.

This week is mostly getting ready for ArtWalk and preparing to go home for Labor Day. I'm ordering some more 8mm film, and I hope it's here in time for Mondays Hamburger Contest.....

Pray for my Brother, he's in the Sudan.

Rain, Rain

It's been raining all day. It's kind of wonderful.

I spent most of the day sending e-mails, reading through the latest issue of Garden and Gun, planning for my new site (shhh...), and preparing for ArtWalk.

Rainy days make me want to listen to music. Music like this:

A Bryan Photo Retreat and RELEVANT Magazine

Current Location: Chattanooga, TN

I'm shooting a wedding in Chattanooga tomorrow, so Rob, Branden, and I are sitting in a hotel room watching Father Goose (an old favorite of mine). I've been in the mountains of North Carolina for the past few days, hanging out with the A Bryan Photo crew. It was an incredible few days of encouragement and motivation. Thank you guys so much for letting me be a part of the week!

In other news, I received a call from my friend Stephen Devries informing me that a picture I took for his organization Bedouins International has found its way to the pages of RELEVANT Magazine.

I really like the way it came out.

It's out this month, so if you want, pick one up!

Artwalk 2008

For ArtWalk this year, I'm presenting a series entitled "The Creative Process". The project is composed of five (5) portraits of different Birmingham Artists. Each of the five (5) framed portraits includes the documentation of how each shot reached the final print; this will include: the predicted sketch of the shot, a polaroid of the shot, a contact sheet, and the final print.

It will kind of look like this:

I'll be presenting at the heavenly Urban Standard on September the 5th and 6th, so if you're in Birmingham during that time, you should come by.

Look for some of the polaroids that will be featured in the show to make an appearance on the blog this week.

I've gotten to know Taylor Christian Jones over the last couple years, and I'm better for it. Every time we have coffee, or just talk about photography, I'm inspired to go out and shoot.

Here are a few shots from "The Roof" series of my friend Patrick. Patrick is a truly wonderful and loyal friend, and although my camera was messed up when I took these, I still think they came out cool!

About a week ago, a tour of ten artists (well, 8 because to of them had to leave the tour early...because they were voted off the island...) came into town for the "Ten out of Tennessee" tour.

Grey Haven Portraits

I few weeks ago, Grey Haven held it's third official concert. To celebrate we all dressed up. And to celebrate all of us dressing up, I thought I would take some portraits.

However, this roll decided that it was expired and did not want to work properly. I well, I still like the shots.
